Emma Johnson, t-LMHC, IADC

Biography

Emma holds her Master’s of Professional Studies in Integrated Behavioral Health from the University of Minnesota. She is a licensed International Alcohol and Drug Counselor (IADC) and a temporarily licensed Mental Health Counselor (t-LMHC). Her clinical experience includes working in both residential and intensive outpatient settings, where she has supported individuals navigating addiction, co-occurring disorders, and severe and persistent mental illness.

Emma is passionate about working with individuals, couples, and families through a holistic and systemic lens—believing that healing encompasses every area of life. She is committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space where clients feel seen, heard, and supported. She believes the suffering we encounter can hold meaningful purpose and offer opportunities for growth.

Her approach to therapy is trauma-informed and person-centered, drawing from a variety of evidence-based modalities including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Existential Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic strategies. Emma is trained in Level 1 of the Gottman Method for couples therapy and is especially passionate about helping individuals and couples build healthier, more connected relationships. Her work is grounded in compassion, honesty, and deep respect for each client’s values, strengths, and autonomy.

Emma’s clinical background also includes facilitating psychoeducational and process groups in an intensive outpatient setting and developing a family support program for those impacted by a loved one’s substance use. She utilizes the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) model to help families improve communication, set healthy boundaries, and encourage positive behavioral change. CRAFT emphasizes understanding behavior in context, leading to increased empathy, connection, and hope. Emma believes that when families are equipped and empowered, they can become a vital part of one’s recovery journey.

At the heart of Emma’s work is a commitment to walking alongside clients at their own pace—supporting them as they explore their emotions, discover meaning and purpose, and navigate life’s challenges with courage and resilience.

Therapist’s Statement

My husband and I recently made the move from Minnesota back to my Iowa roots—the place where I was born and raised! I’m so looking forward to beginning this new chapter at Family Legacy, where I feel honored to join a team that is deeply committed to offering hope and healing.

As a therapist, I strive to create a space where clients feel safe, seen, and supported in exploring the full complexity of their lives—including their beliefs, values, and spiritual identities.

I feel deeply called by God to this work. Becoming a therapist has been more than a career path—it has been a response to a sense of purpose that I believe God placed on my heart. My Christian faith is the foundation of how I view healing, human worth, and the power of relationship. It shapes the way I sit with people in their pain, offer hope, and hold space for transformation.

For clients who are interested, I am open to integrating Christian principles into our work together in a way that feels authentic, relevant, and collaborative. Whether that includes exploring spiritual practices, discussing faith-related questions, or simply acknowledging the role that one’s beliefs play in healing and growth, I approach this process with sensitivity and respect for each person’s unique journey.

My mission is to help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself through the lens of your unique life experiences. Together, we will cultivate skills that empower you to navigate challenges and embrace opportunities for growth. I welcome clients from all backgrounds and belief systems and honor each person’s perspective with openness and curiosity.
